Note that this is a known issue - there's an issued with shared files not working in a Linux VM, and it seems similar components of that don't work with VMware at this time.

George Udosen I found I didn't need to install VMware Tools. Doing an apt-get of open-vm-tools, then open-vm-tools-desktop, and then restarting worked for me. Did not work for me on Ubuntu Didn't work for me either on Removing open-vm-tools and rebooting destroyed my kernel and I had to reinstall the OS from scratch.
That didn't work. You would think restarting the VM would fix it. However as this answer suggests, suspending and resuming the VM works just fine! This worked for me too on VMware Workstation Show 7 more comments.

This works for me too. I noticed that the problem occurs after I copy something from guest to host, then I can not longer copy from host to guest. This is the quickest fix, everything else has been a waste of time. This is the only solution that worked for me. Win 10 host, copy from guest Win 7 paste to another guest Win 8. Suspending and restarting VMware works but this solution suggesting running in background is an easier pill to swallow for sure when you're running a lot of VMs and testing routines.

You are on the right track on this. In such setup two vmtoolsd processes must be running. The one you are killing with your script is the system-daemon and it is needed there for a reason. And do you mean copying from guest to host or from host to guest or from within the guest only???

Expect issues when sleep kicks in on the host. This also doesn't work if you're interested in running in a fully isolated host-only network. I had the same issues but with open-vm-tools Ubuntu 14 guest, Win10 Host I solved it by simply restarting VMware Workstation as mentioned previously Everything took just 2 sec.

If you want the Shared Folders feature to remain open, you can enable them by selecting " Always enabled ".
